Geoexchange Heating
Using the natural warmth of the earth to heat our
living spaces
This is a very down-to-earth way of heating our homes. The earth is a huge
solar energy storing device that absorbs the sun’s energy and stores
it below the surface. This stored energy is significantly more energy than
we need every year!
The geoexchange system at Verdant is able to harvest and deliver this energy
to the suites using three main elements:
| 1. |
A field of 300 foot-deep wells beneath the building
is utilized to collect heat from the ground. |
| 2. |
A combination of ground source heat pumps with a backup
gas boiler |
| 3. |
The heat is delivered to the suite through an in-floor
radiant heating system. |
How Does Geoexchange Work?
The heat from the earth continuously transfers to the water that is pumped
through pipes in the ground. This water flows back to the heat pumps, which,
working on the same principle as your refrigerator (only backwards!), convert
the low temperature into higher temperature and transfer the heat to another
set of pipes which runs beneath the flooring of the individual suites (radiant
heating system).
